Write First: How to shift stuck or negative energy through writing...

What to do when you feel creatively blocked

One thing I’ve known for a long time is that when I move old thoughts, patterns, energies, frequencies, or vibrations out of my body and onto the page - it helps those energies transform into something new.

By becoming my own compassionate witness as I acknowledge and accept what is arising through me, I allow space for those thoughts, feelings and emotions to exist; so I stop resisting them and trying to hold onto them. Instead of keeping myself safe and closed and silent, I let the words flow out onto the page. And, over time, something changes within me: the old stories begin to evolve.

New patterns emerge and start to create new foundations for my life and my behaviours.

What I received in transmission when I asked for help this morning was a new perspective on writing as an act of transmutation.

I reached for my new magical anointing oil that I bought recently from Sons of Asgard in Glastonbury. It holds the power and frequency of the Violet Flame of Transmutation. As I put the oil onto my skin, I asked for help and support with my feelings of stuckness, lethargy, lack of motivation, and all the ways that I am feeling internally frustrated with myself today.

Bearing in mind that it is about day nine of my cycle, and this is a common experience for me as my energy begins to rise and return from the depths of my winter darkness. I feel that rushing surge of spring moving through me that needs to be met with greater creativity, which my body has not yet had an opportunity to adjust to. And so I have been feeling sluggish and slow, and also frustrated that I’m not writing, creating, or moving faster than I have been able to.

As I anointed myself with the Violet Flame oil, I asked for help with transmuting these sensations. And what I received in that moment was a flash of insight that to write is to transmute negative, blocked, or stuck energy into the free flow of creative life-force.

All energy is creative life-force energy. If I’m feeling blocked, it’s because I have created blocks around the flow, the direction, and the dynamism of the energy that wants to move through me. On the days when I feel, or I tell myself and believe, that I don’t have time to write because I have to do this, this, or this other thing, those are the days I feel most creatively blocked, stuck, and frustrated.

Writing is what frees my creative life-force to flow, magnify, and multiply as it moves.

So now I have a deeper perspective and a new understanding of what is happening when I move words down and out through my body onto the page. Because in that process the writing and the movement of energy becomes a physical act of transmutation that changes stuck, blocked, or negative energy into the flow of creative energy.

I’m writing this whilst I’m walking and running an errand to deliver the winter coats to the dry cleaners. Being able to use my phone for digital transcription means that I can move my body, move my energy, and move words onto the page - all at the same time. And all whilst I am also doing other tasks. Sometimes it’s not easy for me to remember this, and so those rituals and reminders are important to help me see beyond the frustration of my stuck or limited experience, and to remember that writing brings me life. Writing moves my energy. Writing gives me joy. And writing is my medicine.

Sometimes I have to just completely reorient myself to Stop: and Write First.

As visionary writers this is how we transmute old stories, beliefs, narratives, stuck energies, behaviours, thoughts, and emotions. This is how we participate in dismantling the old and creating the new. This is how we change ourselves and we change the world.

As visionary writers we are the creative alchemists of our own souls.

Sally-Shakti Willow

Writing my PhD in Utopian Poetics showed me what it means to be a writer. I wrote four books of poetry and a 50,000 word thesis, and I started journaling as a way to ground and heal myself.

While I was studying, I also wrote and maintained the Contemporary Small Press website, writing regular reviews of new fiction and poetry published by small presses. I was on the judging panel for the 2018 Republic of Consciousness Prize for literary fiction from the small presses. So I was reading a lot of great writing too. And I co-developed and taught a series of workshops called WELLBEING WHILE WRITING for doctoral researchers at the University of Westminster.

WELLBEING WHILE WRITING used practical techniques from Creative Writing pedagogy to support PhD students of all disciplines with the work of WRITING their thesis. I also used my knowledge and experience of yoga and meditation to provide MOVING & BREATHING FOR WELLBEING workshops to graduate students at the University.

I’ve been teaching English since 2004 and I’ve been teaching Creative Writing at the University of Westminster since 2017.
