Life by the Stars

When the Book Finds its Author...

In this Writing & Thriving conversation, Sally-Shakti speaks with Amanda Walsh, founder of Astrology Hub and author of the forthcoming teaching memoir Life by the Stars. Amanda is one of the most trusted voices in the global astrology community, connecting millions of people with transformational astrological guidance and education.

Through her Developmental Editing journey with Sally-Shakti, Amanda brought Life by the Stars into its final form – a deeply personal and cosmically layered teaching memoir that documents her journey from building a high-powered corporate empire in New York City, to blowing it all up, moving to Hawaii, and allowing astrology to become the guiding light that helped her navigate the most tumultuous and transformational years of her life.

Amanda shares the astrological blueprint she now understands was guiding her all along – from a textbook Capricorn first act driven by ambition and external achievement, through a Saturn return that cracked her open, to a Pluto transit that, like the goddess Pele herself, destroyed in order to create. Woven throughout the memoir are astrologer’s notes by Natasha Alter, overlaid onto her story so that readers can come to understand their own charts, their own transits, and their own cosmic design through the lens of her experience.

This conversation explores what it truly means to live in alignment with your soul’s purpose, the courage required to write a book this vulnerable, and the quiet knowing that sometimes you write not because you understand why, but because the book has haunted you for years and you simply know that you must.

Writing my PhD in Utopian Poetics showed me what it means to be a writer. I wrote four books of poetry and a 50,000 word thesis, and I started journaling as a way to ground and heal myself.

While I was studying, I also wrote and maintained the Contemporary Small Press website, writing regular reviews of new fiction and poetry published by small presses. I was on the judging panel for the 2018 Republic of Consciousness Prize for literary fiction from the small presses. So I was reading a lot of great writing too. And I co-developed and taught a series of workshops called WELLBEING WHILE WRITING for doctoral researchers at the University of Westminster.

WELLBEING WHILE WRITING used practical techniques from Creative Writing pedagogy to support PhD students of all disciplines with the work of WRITING their thesis. I also used my knowledge and experience of yoga and meditation to provide MOVING & BREATHING FOR WELLBEING workshops to graduate students at the University.

I’ve been teaching English since 2004 and I’ve been teaching Creative Writing at the University of Westminster since 2017.
